Do Androids Dream of Fucking You Up?

I just finished listening to a great podcast about the Alien franchise. It’s called The Faculty of Horror and if you like thinking way too philosophically about horror and science fiction, you’ll probably adore it as much as I do.

One of the points it touches on is that the franchise’s androids don’t seem to follow Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

These laws were developed for Asimov’s 1942 short story, Runaround, and have gone on to have a tremendous influence on science fiction. The idea is these rules would somehow check the potentially superior abilities of the AI and keep them in service of humans.

When android bukkake goes wrong.

In Alien the androids are squarely in the service of the Weyland-Yutani corporation. In the first film the android Ash is kind of a dick. In the sequel, Aliens, the android Bishop is pretty cool. In the sort of prequel, Prometheus, we get David. This android is a dick and creepy. But actually kind of cool.

The dominant villain of the franchise is not actually the xenomorphs. It is the corporation. Its greed is what causes just about every single death in the films. The xenomorphs are essentially a force of nature, like a plague of atomic locusts. The androids are perfect company men. They serve the corporation above all and seem to be playing a different game than the humans.

So here’s my idea for an Alien film. The Weyland-Yutani corporation finds the xenomorph home world. It turns out to be a planet sized biological weapons factory created by the engineers or whatever. Weyland-Yutani sends a small army of androids to take it over with the intent of using it to destroy the aliens who created it. Or something like that. I should probably walk it out a little more.
